Abstract
The matrix-martensite interfaces in Cu-Al-Ni shape memory alloys have been examined by means of transmission electron microscopy. Fine parallel striations were observed on both the interfaces between the β1 matrix and γ1' martensite, and the β1 matrix and γ1' martensite. The striations have been reasonably accounted for in terms of interfacial dislocations, which are considered to exist as a result of random faulting on the basal planes and twinning planes of the β1' and γ1' martensites, respectively. The observed fine structures of the β11' interface provides a new model for the interface between a matrix and a thermoelastic twinned martensite.
