Abstract
Physical mechanisms of nonlinear distortion in high density recording on longitudinal media are studied using a self consistent 2-D model. These mechanisms include transition shifts, pulse broadening, and amplitude reduction because of overwrite modulation and proximity effects. The dominant mechanism at high density is found to be partial erasure of the preceding transition.
