Abstract
XY spins on a square lattice dominated by second-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange have nontrivial degeneracies of their classical ground states. Spin-wave calculations, intuitive arguments, and simulations show that thermal fluctuations select collinear states, wherein spins align parallel or antiparallel to a single direction, but dilution selects "anticollinear" states wherein the two sublattices order at right angles.
