Abstract
The magnetic linear birefringence (MLB) in paramagnetic rare-earth garnets (Tb, Nd, Yb, Tm) is reported. The theory including crystal-field effects accounts for observed temperature and magnetic-field dependence of MLB. To interpret remaining features of MLB it is necessary in general to go beyond the Judd-Ofelt approximation.
