Abstract
The metallurgical events which happen during the penetration of metallic jets into steel targets are studied. These jets were shot into steel with velocities between 2 800 m/s and 8700 m/s. The deformation, fracture and phase transformation processes of targets are investigated as a function of jets velocities. Special attention is drawn to features which are characteristic for this ballistic process, i.e. molten films and adiabatic shear.
