Abstract
Na atoms were excited and polarized by pumping the Na 3s 2S1/2 → 3p 2P1/2 3/2 transition using a linearly or circularly polarized dye-laser beam. Linearly polarized synchrotron radiation raised these atoms to core excited Na 2p5 nl n'l' 2,4L states lying below the Na 2p5 3p 3P ionization limit. The intensity of the electrons ejected upon the Na 2p5 nl n'l' 2,4 L → Na 2p6 1S0 εl autoionization was measured as a function of VUV-photon energy.
