DECAGONAL PHASE

Abstract
Studies of phase formation in rapidly solidified Al-Mn alloys (composition range 18-22 at% Mn) show that an icosahedral phase is replaced by another noncrystallographic phase, a decagonal phase. The decagonal phase is another example of quasicrystal forming in Al-transition metal systems. It has a noncrystallographic point group (10/m or 10/mmm) together with long-range orientational and positional order and one-dimensional translational symmetry. The space group P105/m is suggested for the decagonal phase. Similarity and difference of Al-Mn and Al-Pd decagonal phases is discussed.
