Abstract
The magnetization as a function of temperature and the uniaxial anisotropy of a series of amorphous Gdx Co1-x alloys, with x ≥ 0.45 are reported. Two Gdx Cu1-x alloys were studied at the same time to distinguish the influence of the cobalt atoms. The uniaxial anisotropy increases strongly for x → 0.74. This result can not be explained with calculations of dipolar interactions due to a microstructure in amorphous alloys. The gadolinium is thought to contribute mainly to the anisotropy, whereas the Co-Co pairs are of less importance.
