CALCULATIONS OF ELECTRONIC STATES IN THE MUFFIN TIN MODEL OF A LIQUID METALL. Huisman1, L. Schwartz1 et A. Bansil2

We consider the application of the effective medium approximation (EMA) to the muffin tin model of a liquid metal. The theory is applied to a model in which the atomic potentials are represented by a single resonant l = 0 phase shift and the EMA spectrum is compared with the results of several other approximations. Our calculations indicate that the EMA density of states exhibits surprisingly sharp structure and, also, that for certain E and k, the EMA leads to negative spectral densities.
