GRAIN BOUNDARIES IN A SUPERLATTICE OF IRON-OXIDE PARTICLES

Abstract
Small particles of iron oxide originating from a magnetic liquid were found to form a very regular close packed structure. The particle diameter was 6.9 nm and the particle-particle distance 9.1 nm. Between the well aligned structures grain boundary like regions were found. These boundaries could sometimes be described as boundaries between areas of different thickness and/or stacking sequence.
