THERMAL EXPANSION AND MAGNETOSTRICTION IN HEXAGONAL PrNi5 AND TmNi5 SINGLE CRYSTALS

Abstract
Low temperature thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements on single crystals of the hexagonal PrNi5 and TmNi5 compounds are presented. Crystal field leads to a quite different behaviours in both compounds and its knowledge allows to give account for the observed magnetoelastic effects. Especially it is possible to determine separately the one ion and the exchange contribution in these effects.
