Abstract
The light-induced frequency-locking of a nematic liquid crystal in a Fabry-Perot interferometer with a periodic optical drive are studied. The frequency lockings with winding numbers 1/1, 1/2, 113, 1/4, and so on are easily observed by varying the driving amplitude Ɗ and frequency ω. Frequency lockings between the above mentioned winding numbers can only be observed occasionally due to the effect of noise. All the winding numbers of the frequency lockings belong to the Farey tree. Quasiperiodic motion is obtained for small drive amplitudes. Oscillation with a wide band power spectrum is observed between the frequency-locking regions for larger drive amplitudes. A numerical simulation of the system reveals Arnol'd tongues in the Ɗ - ω plane in addition to the Farey order of the frequency locking. Chaotic behavior is also found.
