QUANTITATIVE STUDY OF SOLID STATE REACTIONS BY ATOM PROBE MICROANALYSIS

Abstract
A review is presented of some quantitative studies of phase transformation behaviour in steels, carried out using the techniques of field ion microscopy and atom probe microanalysis. It is demonstrated that careful measurement of alloy element redistribution can give direct insight into the mechanism of the pearlite reaction. Also, the measurement of carbon distribution on the atomic scale provides valuable evidence concerning the mechanism of the bainite reaction, and reveals that a spinodal mechanism is operating during the low temperature ageing of high-carbon ferrous martensite.
