Abstract
We address the problem of the thermodynamically consistent description of energy transfer in condensed media and exhibit results for a two-level system. We construct quantum Langevin equations which are in general non-Markovian, nonlinear, and contain operator (rather than c-number) fluctuations. Thermodynamic consistency is manifest by the existence of relations between dissipative terms and correlation functions of the fluctuations. Under appropriate conditions we are able to rewrite our equations in the form of a stochastic Liouville equation (SLE), permitting a comparison between existing theories and our new approach. The approach provides temperature dependences for the SLE coefficcients and predicts temperature-dependent spectral and transport properties.
