Abstract
The manufacturing of joints between sapphire and niobium by solid-state bonding and the preparation of notched four-point bend test specimens from the welded pieces are described. Experiments with joints between single crystalline Nb and sapphire show that the measured interface fracture energy Gc depends on the crystallographic orientation of the two crystals bonded together. For joints between polycrystalline Nb and (1100) sapphire the interface fracture energy Gc is influenced both by the initial metal grain size before welding and by the amount of grain growth during welding. The results are discussed with respect to the formation of unbonded interface areas and low energy interface structures during solid-state bonding.
