Abstract
The characteristic features of the phonon dispersion of a monatomic linear chain in a Born - von Kármán and a shell model formalism are outlined. Comparing model calculations with measurements of the [001]L phonon dispersion of intercalated graphite, we find that a shell model has to be used for an appropriate description.
