Abstract
The Raman spectrum of incommensurate γ-Na2CO3 reveals an additional number of modes which are activated by the distortion. A complex coupled mode spectrum observed at low frequencies is interpreted as arising from an interaction of acoustic and librational dispersion branches at the incommensurate wavevector. The high-frequency internal mode ν1 of the CO2-3 ions is observed as a doublet whose splitting varies with temperature as (TI-T) with β 0.35.
