Abstract
Birefringence images due to dislocations and inclusions in YAG crystals were studied with polarizing microscopy. Birefringence images of dislocations viewed end-on as well as viewed from the side were interpreted by Tanner and Fathers' theory with due considerations of the effect of long-range strain field. The Burgers vectors of dislocations were found to be of the type of [MATH] <111>, <100> and <110>. The effect of long-range strain field on birefringence images was elucidated.
