Abstract
The effects of a fluctuating electric field gradient upon a quadrupole-split Mössbauer spectrum are briefly reviewed and some theoretical spectra are given. An account of established examples of e.f.g. relaxation is then outlined. These examples include the clathrate system investigated by Gibb and some ionic salts containing organometallic cations.
