Abstract
We have investigated the magnetic structure of Tb2Cl3 by means of neutron scattering. The compound has a monoclinic structure corresponding to space group C 2/m, the metal atoms forming chains of octahedra along the [010] direction. At temperatures below TN = (40.8 ± 0.2) K Tb2Cl3 shows 3D long-range antiferromagnetic order with a unit cell that coincides with the chemical one (k = 0), but the C lattice splits up into two antiferromagnetically coupled P lattices. The magnetic moments of the two inequivalent Tb3+ ions saturate at µ1 = (8.7 ± 0.3) µB and µ2 = (2.6 ± 0.4) µB, respectively.
