Abstract
Electrohydrodynamic ion emission from molten lithium nitrate is being investigated in support of the light-ion inertial confinement fusion program at Sandia National Laboratories. Positive ions are generated at the apex of a field emitter tip by applying a high electric field to a thin layer of the molten sait at the tip surface. In this paper we summarize the first observation of EHD ion emission from molten lithium nitrate, and the first measurements of the divergence, the spatial distribution, and the mass spectra obtained during dc operation of the ion source.
