Abstract
The interaction of CO with Ru field emitter surfaces is studied by pulsed field desorption mass spectrometry (PFDMS). Ru(CO)n+x species up to Ru(CO)2+4 are detected. These ions are formed from their corresponding neutrals. Field strength variation measurements show that the Ru(CO)4 cannot form under the influence of steady electrical fields. Thus, the Ru(CO)4 is the product of a surface reaction occurring field free in the time between the pulses. Variation of this reaction time at different temperatures proves the RU(CO)2 formation to be associated with an activated process. A model is presented which describes this process as the removal of Ru lattice atoms from kink site positions and their diffusion into the terrace regions where further reaction towards the high index Ru(CO)x species occurs.
