Abstract
Event-by-event studies of 16O + Ag and 84Kr + Ag collisions with maximal multiplicities have been performed in nuclear emulsions. For 16O + Ag we observe a smooth increase in the maximal multiplicity from 10A to 2100A MeV except possibly in the region 130A - 180A MeV. Complete breakup into singly charged particles is not reached below 2.1A GeV in the asymmetric 16O + Ag case whereas it is reached at about 1A GeV in the fairly symmetric 84Kr + 107Ag system.
