Abstract
The nonlinear internal friction was measured in an In-Tl (24.0 at% Tl) and a Cu-Al-Ni (14 wt% Al, 3 wt% Ni) single crystal. It was found that both the linear and nonlinear damping vary strongly as the martensitic transformation temperature is approached. The data are interpreted in terms of pretransformation fluctuations which for the In-Tl alloy are characterized by an activation energy of .63 eV.
