Abstract
Detailed calculations have been made of the grain scattering spectra of ultrasonic waves in steel, taking into account not only the mean grain size but also the detailed distribution of sizes. It i s now possible to allow for this term in experimental data on any given alloy and thus to isolate damping effects generally associated with dislocations. Some examples are presented of practical results, with illustrations of typical damping spectra in the 15-50 MHz range. Their relationships to macroscopic mechanical properties are now being investigated.
