Abstract
The intermetallic compound NiMn undergoes a series of transformations from the high temperature f.c.c γ-phase, via an intermediate β-phase with CsCl type structure to a low temperature tetragonal θ phase with CuAuI type structure. The martensitic transformation β-θ in NiMn is associated with characteristic elastic properties : the β phase has a low absolute value of Young's moduls and the θ phase has an extremely high (negative) temperature coefficient (dE/dt) ; both characteristic indicate lattice instability favouring a martensitic transformation β - θ.
