Abstract
Simulations of first order martensitic transformations from a square to a triangular lattice using a Morse interatomic potential augmented with an oscillatory tail are reported. Heterogeneous nucleations from two types of defects and also homogeneous nucleation of a perfect crystal was studied at two different temperatures. Substantially different nucleation times and transformation growth patterns were observed amongst the various cases, and one showed the development of a "strain embryo" percursor.
