REORDERING AND A NEW ORDERED PHASE IN Ni-Al MARTENSITE AFTER AGEING

Abstract
The tempering of the martensite of the 63.8Ni-1Co-Al alloy was investigated by electron microscopy. It was found that a new ordered phase Ni2Al having a monoclinic C2/m structure formed when the martensite α'1(Llo) was aged at 673K for several ks. This structure is closely related to the hexagonal Ni2Al (P[MATH]ml) phase obtained when tempering the mother phase of nicke-rich NiAl alloys, and is found to be a martensitically deformed structure of the hexagonal phase. Optical- and electron-microscope observation showed that the morphology and internal defects in the aged specimen are essentially the same as those in the as-quenched martensite.
