Abstract
We have directly observed the "ferroelectric" Eu and A2u soft modes in SrTiO3 separately in a temperature range from 50 K to 4.5 K by the hyper-Raman scattering method. Variation of the respective mode frequencies with temperature is measured and is compared to that of the dielectric constant. Further, it is found that the intensity of hyper-Rayleigh scattering light drastically increases as the temperature is lowered till 4.5 K. As for BaTiO3, the hyper-Raman spectra in the cubic phase have been measured with special emphasis on the spectral profile of the seemingly overdamped mode. The present result, however, seems to contradict the existence of the soft mode.
