Abstract
A high-gain CO2 laser is described in which vibrationally excited N2 gas and cold CO2 gas are mixed effectively by means of the diffusion of CO2 gas into N2 gas. By using different types of mixing techniques, a maximum gain of 11 m-1 was obtained when CO2 gas was injected parallel to the expanding N2 gas flow. An output power of 4 W was obtained from an 1.2 cm active length. In addition, He gas addition to the N2 gas flow was found to decrease the small-signal gain with increasing He gas flow rate.
