Abstract
Co Sn1-x alloys have been obtained by a vapour quenching technique over a large composition range and magnetization measurements have been carried out. Contrary to the cobalt-tin equilibrium phases, these quenched alloys exhibit magnetic order which appears at a critical composition near xcr ≈ 0.5. Such a behaviour is related to the need of about 8 or 9 cobalt atoms around a given Co atom for the existence of magnetic moment. Spin glass-like propertie have also been observed.
