Abstract
The isotropic permanent magnet alloy Alnico 2 has been studied by atom probe field-ion microscopy and high voltage transmission electron microscopy. An interconnected microstructure of α1 (Fe-Co rich) and α2 (Al-Ni rich) phases was found, with a third, copper-rich phase present in the form of ~ 5 nm diameter precipitates in the α2 phase. Domain wall pinning at these precipitates is suggested as a cause of the increase in coercivity with the addition of copper.
