M X-RAY LINEWIDTHS OF GOLD

Abstract
The M x-ray emission spectrum of Au (Z = 79) was measured with a high precision double crystal spectrometer. The widths of M4, 5 levels were determined and compared to theoretical calculation as well as to available experimental results. The broad high energy satellite band accompanying the M and M lines were isolated by fitting Lorentzian profiles to the main lines. The observed line widths are noticeably narrower than predicted by the theory.
