Abstract
The Nd-YAG pulsed laser and the continuous wave CO2 Laser can be very interesting tools to transform the materials in solid state. The aim of solid surface treatment is to decrease the high roughess of melted samples which limits the development of industrial applications. With the Laser pulse (30 J, 25 ns), shock waves can be generated on an aluminium alloy AU40 and a considerable hardness increasing has been obtained. With CO2 laser, hardening of steel by quenching can increase hardness and fatigue life. With a predeposited layer or with a reactive gas addition, nitrided, carburized and borided layers can also be elaborated on titanium alloys. These very hard layers (above 1000 Hv) enhanced the erosion resistance of Ti-6 Al-4V alloy.
