Abstract
The Vlasov-Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation is derived from coupled equations of motion for the one-body density matrix and the two-body correlation function as obtained from the density-matrix hierarchy. The respective approximations introduced for the classical collision term are related with energy and momentum conservation in single nucleon-nucleon collisions and found numerically to be approximately valid for hard scattering processes in case of intermediate energy heavy-ion reactions. A related second order approximation in the nucleon-nucleon interaction, however, turns out not to be justified for colliding nuclear systems in the Fermi energy domain.
