Abstract
It is pointed out that microwave irradiation can be used to vary the population storage time in optical pumping of metastable states in colour centre and molecular Systems. This may be used to study the role of metastable storage in persistant spectral hole-burning. As an example, data for the (N-V)- centre of diamond are presented.
