Abstract
Internal friction spectra measured on martensitic alloys all exhibit a common feature : the internal friction is high in the martensitic phase and low or very low at high temperatures, when the material has a β structure. Transmission electron microscopy observations revealed a high density of new interface dislocations in the martensite. A qualitative model is proposed which explains the high damping of the martensite by the movement of these dislocations.
