Abstract
The kinetics of xenon excitation and ionization and of the electron gas heating ahead of the shock front were studied the oretically for the Mach number range 14 to 20 and initial pressure p = 5 mm Hg.The ionization kinetics of xenon atoms was found to differ substantially from that of argon. In this case one should take simultaneously into account both associative ionization and photoionization, the latter becoming predominant in the charged particle production in xenon with increasing strength of the incident shock. The theoretical predictions for the electron density are compared with experimental values.
